Astoria Oregon Rust, The Guy.*
Bob's Blog, brainiac.
Vodou Kitty, mathematician with a twist.

We need all the non-bloviaters we can find. From Coastwatch to Al Jazeera, the ideological info-ma-shun dams that make their living appealing to the coarsest of society's interests are hurting us all, sometimes personally and always societally.

* UPDATE August 4, 10:00am: Oh dear. The Guy gets a second story (of the ones that I have read and actually know some of the details) completely wrong and has a concept of the DA's office that he's gotten from 1940s film noir. Too bad; he had promise.

LA freeway view. My friend Larry thinks a good high school essay question would be: What do you think this sign means, and do you agree?

My drug of choice

Dude at mung.net has (yet another) insightful and unique description, this one of a "narcotizing yellow-orange-blue glow from horizon to zenith." I think he's talking about this night, July 16 or 17.

Rain is worth only the occasional comment about an unusual rain. I have it on empirical evidence that Sunday morning all of Astoria -- soundly asleep in their upstairs bedrooms, windows opened to the smooth night air -- all (except the hardy souls who were preparing for Sunday market) of Astoria this morning around 5:35 was awakened by a gentle rain on the roof. We imagined our next water bills coming in well under three figures as we listened a few minutes more, waiting patiently for the gentle summer shower to lull us back to sleep.

Alright, already, I'm UP.

Another hour in which the rain decreased nicely down the other side of the bell curve, and it was all over except for the puffy white clouds and the puffy eyes.
